Marsh Award to Anthea Bell PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nikki Gamble
Wednesday, 24 January 2007

Image Anthea Bell is the recipient of The Marsh Award for Children's Literature in Translation 2007 for her fine translation of Kai Meyer's The Flowing Queen from German into English. Accepting the Award Anthea said:

'When that archetypal story-teller the Ancient Mariner holds you with his glittering eye and you cannot chose but hear, the tale he is telling wasn't necessarily in your mother tongue to start with. That is where translators and translations come in. The good story, the real -page-turner - like Kai Meyer's book - travels easily between languages, and encouraging such books to enter the English-speaking world is what the Marsh Award is all about."

Anthea Bell has twice been a previous winner of the award:  in 2003 for  the translation of Hans Magnus Enzensberger's Where Were You Robert? and in 1996 for Christine Nostlinger's A Dog's Life.

The second part of The Flowing Queen Trilogy, The Stone Light, was published in 2006 and the final book, The Glass Ward, will be published in April 2007.

An interview with Kai Meyer is available on the Write Away website

The shortlisted titles were:
