Write Away reviewer Steph Johnson has just returned from a working trip to Milan. She has written this brief report for Write Away:
The ‘Catwalks of Milan’ may have passed me by, but not so its International School! This Easter I was thrilled to be able to work with colleagues in its primary phase to deliver two days training on First Steps Reading 2nd Edition. From the moment I was met at the hotel, colleagues from the school could not have made me more welcome. For the whole of the two days training, they continued to be warm and friendly, enthusiastic about the resource and the training and excited about the impact it is going to have on learning and teaching in the school. Not only that, but it was also clear how it matches perfectly with the philosophy and ethos of the Primary Years Programme www.ibo.org/pyp. Not to mention, they managed to muster all this positive response at the end of a busy term, two days into their Easter break… what commitment! It was a pleasure to work with colleagues who are so keen to develop reading across the school. I did, of course, introduce them to the Write Away website and all the treasures therein! First Steps Reading 2nd Edition is a practical, tried and tested literacy resource that supports the development of independent, confident readers and raising of attainment, and achievement, of all pupils. It is based on sound educational research in learning and, in particular, reading. First Steps Reading 2nd Edition is based on assessment for learning and supports focused planning for learning. It gives excellent advice and ideas on what to teach, when to teach it and how to teach it, providing a wide repertoire of practical ideas and strategies. It supports a totally inclusive approach to the teaching of reading and fits in with national programs of work whatever the education system.
