IBBY announces the nominees for the Hans Christian Andersen Award 2008.
The UK nominations are DAVID ALMOND for writing and JAN PIENKOWSKI for illustration. BEVERLY NAIDOO is nominated by the South African section. The Irish nominations are KATE THOMPSON for writing and MARIE-LOUISE FITZPATRICK for illustration. LLOYD ALEXANDER who died in May has been nominated by the USA. Illustrators SHAUN TAN, NICKOLAI POPOV, ROBERTO INNOCENTI and DAVID WIESNER are nominated by Australia, Russia, Italy and USA respectively. Writer GUUS KUIJER author of The Book of Everything , translated into English and received in the UK in 2006 to great acclaim, is nominated by the Netherlands. The Hans Christian Andersen Awards are presented every two years by IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) to an author and an illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature. IBBY National Sections from 35 countries have made their selections submitting 30 authors and 30 illustrators (full list below). The elected Chair of the jury is Zoreh Gheani (Iran). The jury members from Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, France, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the USA will meet in MArch 2008 to select the winners. The announcement will be made at the Bologna Book Fair on Monday 31st March 2008 and the Awards will be presented to the winners at the 31st IBBY Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark on 7th September 2008. Recent UK recipients of the Awards are Quentin Blake, Anthony Browne and Aidan Chamber.
