TOO MUCH PINK? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nikki Gamble
Saturday, 13 October 2007

Image Are you fed up with princesses, mermaids and fairies? Are books marketed at girls too pink, too glittery and too fluffy? Mary Hoffman argues that this is a worrying trend that limits girls' reading experiences.

In her new story, Princess Grace, Hoffman challenges the prevailing image of the passive pink princess. Her irrepresible heroine, Grace, believes she wants to be a picturebook princess until her grandmother's wise words send her searching in a different direction. Soon she discovers that there may be more to real life princesses.... and princes too.

Read Mary Hoffman's article in The Guardian

So, what do you think? What have we achieved regarding gender stereotyping in literature since the 1970s? Are the roles that are being presented to young girls more limiting now han they have ever been? Or is it a case of giving the girls what they really want? All comments in the forum.
