WAR HORSE PREMIERE PDF Print E-mail

Image The adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's  War Horse is currently playing at the National Theatre with a run that extends until 17th January 2008. ALEC GAMBLE, Project Trident work experience student attended press night and reports here for Write Away.

The play, set in both French and German territory during the First World War, is based on the book by Michael Morpurgo. At the outbreak of the war, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry by his father and is shipped to France where he is put to work, ,first by the French army, and then through a chain of events the German army. Albert distraught at losing his beloved companion  joins the army in a bid to find his horse but it does not prove as easy as he had hoped.

The captivating mimicry of the horse Joey and other animals is displayed by an outstanding feat of puppetry from the world reknowned Handspring Puppet Company. The mannerisms of the animals  are copied to perfection. In no time at all you forget that they are puppets and the puppeteers just disappear from the consciousness of the audience. Truly amazing! Handspring Puppet Company

The heart-wrenching tale is a must see for anyone-planning on visiting the theatre. Suitable for all ages.  An unusal choice for a Christmas show perhaps, but a perfect choice for those who want to reflect on the universal theme of 'war and peace' at this time of year. A timeless classic.
