Leonie Pratt with her award The Big Book of Science Things to Make and Do The Big Book of Science Make and Do (Usborne Books) was announced as winner of the Royal Society Junior Prize on the 16th June. While often the adult award gets more of the media focus the fact this book won demonstrates what children are looking for to make science fun - practical activity. On shortlisting, the Junior Prize judging panel said: "A good doing book. with so many practical activities to engage children they won't be able to put this book down!" Comments from the children judging the books frequently commented on the 'fun' they had. So perhaps those bemoaning the lack of people going into the sciences need to focus on getting children engaged by making, doing and experimenting. The judging panel comprised, Keith Chambers (chair of judges), educator and passionate advocate for outdoor learning; Sonali Gudka, Newsround presenter; Ottoline Leyser, Professor of Plant Development Genetics; Catherine Kendall, Royla Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow and JonTickle host of Brainiac.
