Judges Fiona Waters and Ian McMillan On the hottest day of the year so far, poets, teachers, librarians, and reviewers flocked to the Royal Festival Hall to hear the announcement of the RED hot poetry book of 2008. Chair of Judges. Margaret Meek Spencer introduced the panel of judges, poet Ian McMillan , anthologist Fiona Waters and last year's winner Julie Johnstone . Speaking on behalf of the judges, McMillan talked about the high standard of this year's shorllist and the optimism that this might indicate a turn in fortune for the publishing of children's poetry. In spite of the strong shortlist, there was a clear winner and from the enthusiastic applause and cheers when the announcment was made, it was clear that Jackie Kay was a popular choice. The 2008 CLPE Poetry Award was given to Jackie Kay for Red, Cherry Red Following the announcement, Jackie joined Michael Rosen in conversation and read from her collection. Rosen spoke admiringly of 'The Angler Fish', a poem that he said affected him deeply. He invited Jackie to talk about the watery themes in the book and her interest in writing about grandmother figures. Some of the poems in the collection were originally written to commission and Jackie talked about the delights and challenges of research and writing to order. But it would appear that writing poetry to deadlines is not always possible, Red, Cherry Red was, she said, delivered five years late to her publisher. Late but well worth waiting for! Congratulations to Jackie on her achievement. Read Darren Coult's review Read this book or want to leave a message for Jackie? Post a comment
