MICHELE MAGORIAN WINS COSTA CHILDREN'S PRIZE
Written by Nikki Gamble
Tuesday, 06 January 2009

Image Michelle Magorian, author of Goodnight Mister Tom, is the winner of the Costa Award Children's Category.

Set in post-war Britain, Just Henry is the story of a young boy who escapes the bleakness of life through his passion for cinema. His stepfather, whom he despises, will never compare with his dead father, a war hero. Appalled to find that his partners on a school photography trip include Jeffries, whose father went AWOL and Pip, who is illegitimate, he's about to learn that tolerance and friendship are more important than social stigmas. Processing a film that he took on the trip, Henry makes an alarming discovery. Like a bomb waiting to explode, his world is about to unravel.

The judges said, " This is a master storyteller at work with the sort of descriptive writing that is a joy to read. Just Henry is a soaring, uplifting warm bath of a book - a wonderful roller-coaster of a story which we all absolutely loved."

The Costa Book of the Year is selected from the five Category Award Winners. The 2008 winner of the Costa Book of the Year will be announced at an awards ceremony in central London on Tuesday 27th January 2009.

 The shortlisted books were:

  • Ostrich Boys by Keith Gray
  • The Carbon Diaries by Saci Lloyd
  • Just Henry by Michelle Magorian
  • Broken Soup by Jenny Valentine
  • Write Away congratulates Michelle Magorian but is disappointed that Keith Gray's outstanding Ostrich Boys didn't receive the prize.

THERE ARE CATS IN THIS BOOK
    Written by Nikki Gamble
    Monday, 15 December 2008

ImageWriter and illustrator Viviane Schwarz greeted guests to her book launch while seated at a little wooden school desk, knitting cats, in the independent Review bookshop on Peckham's artsy Bellenden Road. The bold red covers of her latest picture book, 'There are cats in this book' gave the cosy space a festive cheer and everyone munched decorated cat cupcakes and marvelled at Schwarz's lovely bright drawings and interesting cut-out novelty elements in her picture book. 'It's less of a storybook and more of a great event', said Alex Milway (author of The Mousehunter books. Alexis Deacon has worked with Schwarz and came along to support his friend, as well as Walker Books designer Ben Norland and editor Lucy Ingrams.
